In her series “Brown,” Erica Deeman allusively explores the racist history of photographing men of color, including the comparatively limited opportunities to appear sympathetic in portraits. Deeman photographs men of the African diaspora against a brown backdrop. Her technique gestures to both the omission of black men from the tradition of formal portraiture and to the possibilities for rupture, for an opening of photographic self-narration for men of color, including the greater tendency to capture them as humans of range and complexity.
