Mass Incarceration, Visualized

The Atlantic presents an animated visualization of mass incarceration in the US of populations that are specifically and disproportionately of African descent. The animation renders in images an interview with sociologist Bruce Western, who explains the current inevitability of prison (a normal life event) for certain demographics of young black men. "We've chosen the response of the deprivation of liberty," Western says, "for a historically aggrieved group, whose liberty in the United States was never firmly established to begin with."

Ta-Nehisi Coates writes a companion essay exploring the effects of mass incarceration on the African-American family.
