On Being Born Intersex, Julia & Julius in Uganda

BBC presents a poignant, illustrated account of Julius Kaggwa's precarious childhood in Uganda, from being born intersex, being initially raised as a young female Julia, and eventually deciding to become Julius, a male adult, husband, father of four children, and a rights and education activist. The narrative account includes the medical, legal, religious, and cultural contexts for Julia/Julia's story of confusion, family support, exile, return, and inspiration. Julius now works in Uganda, as a full-time educator and Executive Director of SIPD Uganda, an intersex health and rights organization important for the country and wider East African region.
